The Corps Collective Alumni Spotlight

Laporsche Jymi Lipscomb

Administrative Operations Supervisor

Piggly Wiggly Alabama Distributing Co.

After 13 years as a Postal employee, I realized I needed to shift my career, but I just wasn’t sure as to how I could go about it. My resume was not up to date, and I wasn’t sure exactly what it needed to reflect to interest an employer. Then by chance, I came across the Birmingham Corps cohort just at the perfect time.

I had recently begun the Momentum Works program that was directing me through a personal development journey, and it turns out that the two city-funded opportunities coupled together helped me forge a plan for my personal life and career. Both programs guided me on how to put my future career plans and successful path forward into perspective.

Through the Birmingham Corps program, I was able to update my resume, sharpen my interview skills, and identify my strengths and areas of growth that I was able to clearly articulate to hiring managers, as well as on the job. These things helped me to secure my exact goal position as an Administrative Operations Supervisor within four months of completing the Birmingham Corps program. Since accepting the new position in January 2025, I have been promoted once and I’m currently being considered for another promotion, just six months later. Additionally, I was able to use my updated resume and aspiring career goals to secure a spot in a local women’s professional leadership program.

As a result of Birmingham Corps, not only have I furthered my career, but I have also learned to establish connections that will take me even further, as well as to position me do the same for others. I have utilized my resume enhancing skills to assist others in securing new positions too, and that is just the beginning. I am beyond grateful to Mayor Woodfin and the City of Birmingham for supporting and funding programs such as Birmingham Corps that truly impact and uplift Birmingham residents, empowering us create better lives for ourselves and serve our communities.
